The Super Hero Explanation of the Astrological Sun-Ascendant Dynamic

The Sun and Ascendant are two of the three most important elements of your astrological nativity.  The Moon being the third.

In this article, I'll share a few basic thoughts of the meaning of the Sun and Ascendant.  However, given the plethora of beginner books on both these topics, I'm going to focus the bulk of this article on providing a visual example of the way these two astrological energies interact.

Towards that end, I give you the super hero model of the Sun-Ascendant dynamic.

Yeah, yeah, it probably sounds weird ("Did you say super hero?") but this is going to make beaucoup sense and give you a dandy visual image.  Just wait and see.

FYI...You might also find it helpful to read two other articles focused on personal branding to gain a non-astrological view of the Sun and the Ascendant.  These are:

Now, on to the super heroes!

An overview of the Sun

Just as the celestial Sun, that yellow star showing in the day sky, is the center of the universe, the astrological Sun is the center of your personal universe.

Everything else in your world revolves around you.  I'm not suggesting a self-centered vision of a personal universe (anticipating Piscean dissent), but simply the recognition that everything that happens in the world gets filtered through our own personal experience and at the heart of that experience is the Sun.

The Sun is your true identity and a key phrase for its energies is "I will."

This luminary describes the gift of self you give to the world and the optimum ways in which you want to seek recognition for the gifts you have to bring.  When viewed in this way, the most important thing you can do is to live your life in such a way to express the gift of yourself in the most constructive way.  Doing anything less is a loss to society, as well as a personal forfeit (I delve into the concept of gift of self, in a general way, in this article).

Such gifts of self form the basis for your value proposition which is simply a living statement of how you bring value, or add value, to the lives of others.  The greater your constructive expression of your Sun, the greater your value-add to others.  Of course, it works the opposite direction too.  The more destructive your expression, the lower your value to others.

An overview of the Ascendant

The conventional, mundane explanation of your Ascendant is that it describes your physical vitality and your appearance.  The Ascendant is the mask you first show when meeting new people, and then as these new folks move from being strangers to those you trust, then you lower the mask and let your true self, your Sun, shine.   Additionally, many astrology books indicate the tendency for folks to live out your Ascendant in your youth and grow into your Sun as you mature.

Such definitions just graze the surface of the Ascendant, though.  The Ascendant has deeper meanings.  It is the theme by which your life unfolds.  All your experiences in some way pass through the gateway of your life's theme.  For example, someone with Gemini rising will spend his life exploring themes such learning relationship connections, although "relationships" could vary to include people or information or such.

The super hero example of the Sun-Ascendant dynamic

This may sound a bit hokey, but think of a super hero like Batman to explain the relationship between your Sun and your Ascendant.  The Ascendant equals the costumed Batman, battling Gotham's evil-doers, while Bruce Wayne, his "secret identity" equates to the Sun.  When doing his crime-fighting work out in the world, others see the Caped Crusader and not Bruce.  Yet, Bruce is at the very depth of the guy in the purple costume.  He's what came first and will remain to the end.  However, Batman could disappear, due to age, injury, or whatever, to be replaced by some other variation of Bruce's Ascendant life theme.

When you think of the Ascendant that way, then Batman becomes more than just a costume.  It's a lifestyle by which Bruce Wayne lives out his life.  Batman is just as real as Bruce Wayne (well, pretend Batman is real for our discussion!) but he's an outward expression of what is going on in the heart of Bruce.

As we see in our super hero example, while the Sun is your true identity, it may or may not be visible to the outside world -- it all depends on its placement relative to your Ascendant.  The more disharmonious your Sun sign relative to your Ascendant sign, the greater the likely difficulty a person can experience in expressing her Sun through her Ascendant gateway.

A square, by sign or degree, is a perfect example of such a challenge, especially when the Sun is placed in the fourth house.  The reason is because the fourth house Sun equates to a nocturnal placement, when the Sun is below the horizon of visibility.  And of course, as the Sun approaches into aspect with a person's Nadir, it equates to the midnight position of the greatest depth of night.

Super hero postscript

Here's a final thought that I'll leave you concerning the Super Hero model of the Sun-Ascendant dynamic.  The super hero isn't always the Ascendant.  Consider Superman.  Clark Kent is the persona wearing the costume.  He's the Ascendant while Superman is the Sun.

What's coming:  Believe it or not, another article involving super heroes and the Sun, although I didn't plan it that way.  Honest, it just happened!  However, it seems like a good time to release it.  The article is entitled Superman Returns Punctuates Battle Between the Astrological Fourth House and Sun.
